Sharing and Caring

Carlos sharing his crackers

It’s a lesson for everyone to learn, but not always the easiest to truly understand. Children see very early on that holding on to what they have is part of their survival mode, so at times the concept of sharing is only applied to toys when another child is in the area and may want to play. This was not the case with little Carlos, who showed everyone that he has not missed the point of loving one another by giving. After a trip to the doctor, Carlos was given a packet of Ritz crackers. When he was around the children who had not endured the doctor’s visit that he had, instead of hoarding all the crackers, he generously offered one to each child.

What an excellent reminder of our need to love our neighbors as ourselves by sharing.

What’s Cooking at El Ayudante

Ivania, Chilo, Ingrid, and Diana making rolls!

Fried chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, home-made rolls, a few lessons in cooking and etiquette, and good company were on the menu for Chilo, Ivania, Diana, and Ingrid as they prepared their dinner with Lillian and Bethany from start to finish. Peeling, stirring, mixing, serving, learning, cleaning, laughing, and well, of course, eating made the night fly by too quickly.

While all the girls were excellent cooks, Ingrid took to the process like a natural-born chef. As the night was finished with a slice of chocolate coconut cake, the girls headed home with full stomachs and big smiles.

Splish, Splash, and Sun

Recently, the kids spent a Sunday afternoon playing in the sprinklers at one of the team houses here at El Ayudante. They dumped buckets of water on everyone, including Bill, his daughter Jennie, and a housemother who was standing too close! However, when the heat gets really high, complete submersion in a pool is the only answer for relief.

Three visitors from Waco, Texas took all the children swimming one morning, which proved to be a huge hit. The kids splashed and played until their hands and feet looked like little prunes, all wrinkled up from so much water-time.

Arrangements have been made for the children to participate in swimming lessons this summer at one of the universities here in Leon.
